GARNETT, Richard (1835-1906)
British Museum 1851-1899 (Superintendent of the Reading Room 1875, Keeper of Printed Books 1890)
In addition to being an exceptionally distinguished Superintendent he was also substantially responsible for the BM's printed catalogue (GK1) completed two years after his retirement. He was active in the LA and was President in 1893. His Essays in librarianship and bibliography (1899) reprints many of his talks, speeches and other addresses and is one of the titles published in George Allen's 'Library series' which he edited. He was also well known as poet, critic, biographer, translator, essayist and short story writer and is now best remembered for his collection of short stories The twilight of the Gods (1888, new and enlarged edition 1903).
